– Fidelity Investments 2024 Annual Report

Situation

Fidelity is experiencing a recent influx of options-enabled accounts, revealing an opportunity to educate and retain our new users.

► How do we lower the barrier of entry to the complex world of options trading?
► How do we give users confidence in their trading while providing transparency about the risks associated with options?

Vision & Approach

What are our objectives?

► Design, develop, and implement a wizard-style tool to guide new and novice traders through building their very first options trades
► Ensure that the visual design meets Fidelity’s design system standards for personal investors
► Offer an options trading experience different to services provided by our competitors
► Provide the best possible experience for a myriad of users, particularly new and novice traders

Considering the wave of newly registered options traders at Fidelity, my design process was Agile and Lean to support quick turnaround while providing sufficient design artifacts to support future design and development beyond the proof-of-concept.

I leveraged competitive analysis, pre-existing patterns for wizards and walkthroughs, and pain points to guide my first mockups. In the spirit of my lean approach, I designed the experience to be as lean as possible, providing users with minimally required information at the forefront while using progressive disclosure to reveal additional educational content.

Design: Option Trade Builder

I designed Option Trade Builder as a three-step wizard comprising of the three fundamental steps of placing an options trade:

  1. Choosing your strategy based on various factors, such as your sentiment towards the short-term performance of a given stock

  2. Selecting option contract(s) for your chosen strategy

  3. Previewing and analyzing your trade before considering whether to execute the trade

I wanted to distill the complex terminology of options trading—and trading in general—into more intuitive language for novice options traders. I chose clean and simple iconography to reinforce our content and guide our user towards potential options strategies based on their outlooks towards their selected underlying security (e.g., stock).

Test & Learn

By way of Qualtrix surveys, we monitored user feedback on a regular and frequent basis to determine how well Option Trade Builder was adopted by novice options traders and to identify usability issues and any missing or incomplete features.

Analyzing this feedback in the Agile framework allowed us to design and build an elegant, more comprehensive successor to Option Trade Builder that integrates more seamlessly into our research and analysis platform.
